ALTification for WooCommerce — Product Image SEO at Scale
Your product images deserve better than “product on white background”
ALTification reads your WooCommerce product data — descriptions, categories, attributes, and variants — and generates alt text that actually reflects what you’re selling. At scale, without the manual work.

Section 1 — The WooCommerce alt text problem
Heading: Why WooCommerce stores have the worst alt text on the web
It’s not your fault. WooCommerce makes it genuinely difficult to maintain good image alt text at scale.
Images come in via bulk import, supplier CSV, or manual upload — usually with filenames like IMG_4892.jpg or product-variant-003.png. WordPress stores them. WooCommerce displays them. And the alt text either inherits a useless filename, gets left blank, or at best picks up the product name as a generic placeholder.
None of that is doing anything useful for your SEO.
For a store with 50 products this is annoying. For a store with 500 products it’s a significant, compounding SEO gap. Every product page is missing keyword signals. Every image is invisible to Google Image Search. And every competitor who has sorted their image SEO is pulling ahead.

Section 2 — What makes WooCommerce different
Heading: Product images aren’t like regular images
A photo of a dog collar means nothing in isolation. But on a product page for a 25mm tan BioThane martingale collar, that same photo has a wealth of context attached to it — the product name, the material, the width, the hardware type, the category hierarchy, the brand, the focus keyphrase your SEO plugin has assigned.
That context is what turns a generic image description into a piece of alt text that reinforces your page’s relevance, supports your target keyword, and gives Google enough signal to rank your product images in search results.
Most alt text tools can’t access any of that context because they work from the media library, not the product page. ALTification is built the other way around.

Section 3 — What ALTification reads from WooCommerce
Heading: Every available signal, used intelligently
When ALTification scans a WooCommerce product page it reads:
Product name — the most important signal. Every piece of alt text for that product reflects what the product actually is.
Short description — WooCommerce’s product short description is typically a tight, specific summary of what the product is, what it’s made of, and who it’s for. That’s exactly the context needed to generate specific, accurate alt text rather than inferring from the image alone.
Category hierarchy — knowing the full category path (for example, Dog Collars → Martingale Collars → Two Colour Collars) gives ALTification the product type context without relying solely on the keyword.
Product attributes — size, material, colour, finish, hardware type. For products where variants differ visually, attributes are what make the difference between near-identical alt text across a range and genuinely distinct descriptions per variant.
SEO plugin keyphrase — Yoast, Rank Math, SEOPress, All in One SEO, and The SEO Framework are all supported. If you’ve set a focus keyphrase on a product, ALTification uses it.
Image filename — a well-named file adds another layer of context that contributes to the final output.

Section 4 — The variant problem
Heading: The same product in eight colours shouldn’t have the same alt text eight times
If you sell a product in multiple colour variants and each variant has its own image, a media-library tool produces nearly identical alt text for all of them. Because the images look similar and it has no additional context.
ALTification pulls in the product attributes for each variant — colour, material, finish, size — and uses them to generate genuinely distinct alt text per image. The difference between “tan BioThane collar with brass fittings” and “midnight blue BioThane collar with nickel fittings” is the difference between useful alt text and duplicated noise.
For Google, duplicate alt text across variant images is a weak signal at best. Distinct, attribute-specific alt text per variant reinforces each image’s relevance individually and strengthens the overall product page signal.
[Visual note: Side-by-side showing duplicate alt text from a generic tool vs distinct variant alt text from ALTification]
Section 5 — Featured image vs gallery images
Heading: Not all product images are the same
ALTification treats featured images and gallery images differently — because they are different.
The featured image is the hero shot. It should anchor the product name and primary keyword firmly. It’s the image Google is most likely to surface in search results and the one most likely to appear in social shares.
Gallery images are detail shots — a clasp close-up, a lifestyle shot, a colour swatch, a scale reference. Generating the same alt text for a detail shot as for the hero image misses the point of the detail shot entirely. ALTification recognises the distinction and adjusts the prompt accordingly, so gallery images reflect what that specific shot is actually showing — not just a repeat of the hero description.
Section 6 — Scale
Heading: Built for stores that can’t do this manually
For a store with 200 products and an average of four images each, that’s 800 images that need alt text. Doing it manually is weeks of work and requires someone who understands both your products and SEO copywriting. Using a generic tool gives you 800 descriptions that look like alt text but do nothing for your rankings.
ALTification’s per-page scanner lets you work through product pages systematically — select a product, load its images, generate alt text with full product context, review and save. A product with four images takes under a minute. A full catalogue of 200 products is an afternoon, not weeks.
Credits never expire, so you can work through your catalogue at whatever pace suits you — prioritising your highest-traffic products first, then working down through the range.

Section 7 — Category pages
Heading: Don’t forget your category pages
Product pages get the attention, but WooCommerce category pages often carry significant search traffic — particularly for broader, higher-volume keywords. A category page for “martingale collars” that has images with no relevant alt text is missing keyword reinforcement at exactly the level where it matters most for discovery.
ALTification scans WooCommerce category pages as well as product pages, applying the category name and hierarchy as the keyword context for images that appear there. It’s a quick win that most stores overlook entirely.
Section 8 — Credits
Heading: Pay only for what you need
ALTification charges per output, not per image. Each of the following costs one credit:
- Alt text — the most important for SEO and accessibility compliance
- Caption — for display beneath images on product and category pages
- Description — for the WordPress media library and additional SEO signal
Generate all three for a product image for 3 credits, or just the alt text for 1. For a large catalogue where you’re prioritising SEO, starting with alt text only is the most efficient approach — you can always add captions and descriptions later.
Credits never expire. Buy what you need, when you need it.

That’s the full WooCommerce page. A few things worth noting:
The variant problem section is the strongest differentiator on this page — it’s the most concrete, relatable pain point for any store with a range of similar products. Worth making that section visually prominent when you get to design.
The category pages section is a quick win angle that no competitor talks about — worth keeping even though it’s short.
The Martingale collar screenshot you shared earlier is genuinely perfect for this page. It shows real product context being pulled in and real specific alt text being generated. That’s your hero visual for this page when you’re ready.
