How ALTification Works

We read the page, not just the image

Most alt text tools see a folder of images. ALTification sees your website. Here’s the difference — and why it matters for your SEO.

Section 1 — The problem with media library tools

Heading: Why most alt text tools get it wrong

Every other alt text tool works the same way: they open your WordPress media library, look at each image in isolation, and describe what they see. The result is alt text that’s technically present but SEO-blind — because it has no idea which page the image appears on, what you’re trying to rank for, or how the image relates to the surrounding content.

An image of a bifold door installation gets the same description whether it’s on your homepage, your bifold doors product page, or a blog post about planning permission. The image is identical. The SEO context is completely different.

Section 2 — How ALTification works differently

Heading: Page-level scanning — the ALTification approach

ALTification works the other way around. Instead of starting with your media library, it starts with your pages.

When you run a scan, ALTification reads the page — the title, the content, your SEO plugin’s focus keyphrase, and for WooCommerce products, the product description, category hierarchy, and attributes. It then generates alt text that’s relevant to that specific page, not just that specific image.

The same product photo on a category page gets different alt text to the same photo on a specific product detail page. That’s how it should work — and it’s how a good human copywriter would approach it.

Section 3 — The keyword hierarchy

Heading: Smart keyword decisions, automatically

ALTification doesn’t just grab the nearest keyword and apply it blindly. It builds keyword context from every available signal, in order of relevance:

1. Your SEO plugin’s focus keyphrase — Yoast, Rank Math, SEOPress, All in One SEO, and The SEO Framework are all supported. If you’ve set a focus keyphrase, ALTification uses it.

2. Page title — if no keyphrase is set, the page title provides the context.

3. Product data — for WooCommerce products, the product name, short description, category hierarchy, and attributes all contribute to the keyword context.

4. Image filename — a well-named file like aluminium-bifold-doors-living-room.jpg contains useful context that ALTification factors in.

5. Brand keywords — for images that appear across many pages (more than four), ALTification falls back to your site’s brand keywords, producing neutral alt text that works across all contexts without cannibalising individual page relevance.

Section 4 — Shared images handled intelligently

Heading: What happens when the same image appears on multiple pages?

Some images appear everywhere — a hero shot used across several product categories, or a lifestyle image shared between blog posts. Forcing one page’s keyword onto an image that serves five different pages would create misleading alt text for four of them.

ALTification detects shared images and applies a priority hierarchy:

  • Product page + standard page — product page context wins. Product pages carry the most specific, commercially valuable keywords.
  • Multiple standard pages — the page with the strongest SEO data takes precedence.
  • More than four pages — ALTification generates descriptive, brand-relevant alt text that works neutrally across all contexts.

Section 5 — What the badges mean

Heading: Understanding your scan results

When you run a scan in ALTification, every image gets a status badge. Here’s what each one means:

ALT ✓ (green) This image has been processed and alt text is saved. You’re good.

~ SEO gap (amber) Alt text exists, but your page’s target keyword isn’t in it. The image is accessible but not working for SEO. One click generates a keyword-optimised replacement.

⇄ 2 pages (blue) This image appears on more than one page. Hover to see which pages share it. ALTification will generate descriptive alt text that works across all contexts rather than forcing one page’s keyword onto a shared asset.

[Visual note: Screenshot of the plugin UI showing all three badges — the screenshot you shared earlier is perfect here]

Section 6 — What gets generated

Heading: Choose what you need, pay only for what you use

ALTification generates three distinct outputs — each one a separate credit, so you only pay for what you actually need:

Alt text — 1 credit Concise, keyword-relevant, accessibility-compliant. Written to naturally incorporate your focus keyphrase without stuffing. Required for accessibility compliance and the most direct SEO signal.

Caption — 1 credit An engaging, contextual caption suitable for display beneath the image on the page. Tone and length are configurable in settings. Ideal for editorial content, product pages, and case studies.

Description — 1 credit A fuller description of the image for use in the WordPress media library. Useful for internal reference, stock image libraries, and additional SEO signal.

Generate all three for 3 credits, or just the one you need for 1. Every output is editable before saving — review, adjust if needed, and save to the media library in one click.

Section 7 — Supported integrations

Heading: Works with your existing WordPress stack

ALTification is built for WordPress first. It integrates natively with:

  • SEO plugins — Yoast SEO, Rank Math, SEOPress, All in One SEO, The SEO Framework
  • WooCommerce — product pages, category pages, gallery images, featured images
  • Advanced Custom Fields — images stored in ACF fields are scanned alongside standard media
  • All major image formats — JPG, PNG, WebP, and AVIF supported at the same credit rate, no penalties

The key change is Section 6 — it now frames the credit model honestly and positively. “Pay only for what you use” is actually a stronger message than “three for one” because it positions ALTification as fair and transparent rather than bundling things people may not want. A user who only ever needs alt text isn’t being charged for captions they’ll never use — that’s worth saying clearly.
